If you’ve spent any time on Twitch, you would have seen plenty of emotes used within a stream’s chat by other viewers or perhaps even used some yourself.

Emotes are arguably one of the most recognizable aspects of Twitch since they have become the platform’s native language. In addition to representing a quick, easy, and fun way for the community to converse, they enable the community to show support for their favorite creators since many can only be obtained by subscribing to a respective channel. They also act as a powerful way for streamers to define their brand which is why understanding emotes from their meanings to how to create them is important.

What Exactly is Twitch Emotes?

On Twitch, emotes are essentially just another name for emoticons or emojis. Unlike the emoji on your phone or messaging app, Twitch emotes are all unique to the platform.

For example, while most social networking apps use traditional smiley faces and hearts, the majority of Twitch Emotes are unique to every Partnered and Affiliate streamer. They can be everything from varying images of the streamer’s face to custom art, all of which are used to convey an array of moods or greetings.

Emotes on Twitch can be used in a stream’s chat by entering case-sensitive combinations of letters and symbols via the keyboard (as you would when texting a friend) or more easily by selecting one from the emote menu in a channel’s chat.

How to Make Twitch Emotes

Twitch emotes are basically just small images that can either be made by yourself in an image editing program such as Gimp, Adobe Photoshop or created by a third party that does all of the work for you. Many artists often tweet about creating emotes for Twitch streamers on Twitter while others can be found on outsourcing services such as Fiverr.
